What is Sustainable Development?
When we hear the term sustainability, we think of driving less, walking more, and saving water. This is because sustainability is about “doing less harm” and creating efficiency targets. If you are a manufacturer that means cutting Greenhouse Gas emissions and saving resources wherever possible. This is important and part of sustainable development, but instead of being the end of the story it is just the beginning.
Sustainable Development is development that meets the environmental, social, and economic needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
(Global) Sustainability is the state of the global system in which there is the avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.
When we view the efforts of a supplier now through the lens of sustainable development their actions are more than saving energy and water; they are about providing clean water to the community where they manufacturer or helping to bring electricity to a rural village in the country where they source their raw materials. Sustainable development is about creating actions that are good for the environment, the organization, and good for life.
At Good for Life we are focused on Sustainable development in our operations and in our business dealings with our supply chain partners. We have developed a scoring system to measure our suppliers’ initiatives, we invest in giving back with the BetterLife Program, and we scrutinize our own internal operations to look for opportunities to be more sustainable. Our actions are just the beginning as we grow and can affect change in more areas of our business and world through innovation. Good for Life has made sustainable development a core business practice so that it can be more than a procurement company and can be good for all life.
